CHENNAI: A month after a serving Indian Revenue Service (IRS) official from Chennai wrote to President

Draupadi Murmu

seeking dismissal of Union finance minister

Nirmala Sitharaman

, he was placed under suspension on Tuesday. He is scheduled to retire a day later, on Wednesday.
B Balamurugan

wrote to the President after the Enforcement Directorate issued summons to two elderly farmers on charges of money-laundering.

The suspension order, issued by the Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs, said disciplinary proceeding was being contemplated against B Balamurugan, deputy commissioner at the office of principal commissioner of GST, Nungambakkam, and that he is suspended with immediate effect. The order also said he should not leave the headquarters without prior permission from the competent authority.
Deputy commissioner Balamurugan, who also did a hunger strike at his office on January 17, told the media on Tuesday that it was an act of revenge since he had raised his voice against the harassment of two poor farmers.
