NEW YORK CITY (PIX11) -- Hulu is bringing the thrills to life just in time for spooky season.
The streaming giant teamed up with a local run club Wednesday to give runners the ultimate challenge—outrun some of horror’s most iconic villains.
Hulu joined forces with NYC’s Almost Friday Run Club, inviting runners to face their worst nightmares.
“The event is called the ‘Huluween Run for Your Life’, and it’s a mile-long run based on the idea that in horror movies everyone thinks they would survive and could outrun the villain that’s chasing them,” said event organizer Alley Steele. “But we’d like to put that to the test and show people that maybe you couldn’t.”
The Huluween event started at Pier 45 along the Westside Highway before ending at Pier 25. Participants found themselves in a race for survival, attempting to outrun some of Hulu’s most iconic horror villains. What started as a casual run quickly turned into a heart-pounding chase as eerie figures like American Horror Story’s Twisty the Clown emerged from the shadows. Characters from The Nun and The Grudge also made appearances along the way.
“I didn’t expect the monsters to be running as fast as the rest of the runners, but they were faster than us, so it really was a run for your life,” said Jack Sasson of Almost Friday Run Club. He added, “My first thought is I’m probably the first one to die in the horror movies, but in this case, it was good confirmation I may not be.”
Hulu turned up the heat by enlisting some unexpected talent to don the villain costumes, including Olympic gold medalist Masai Russell, who added speed to the horror as she chased down unsuspecting runners.
“I haven’t trained in two weeks ‘cause my season just ended, but I was like, alright, I still got a little bit of stamina in those legs,” Russell said. “And they were like—when I kind of ran up on the side of them—they were like, ‘Who is this? Who is this?’ So it was definitely funny, but I did pretty good for not being able to train.”
For those brave enough to cross the finish line, they won serious bragging rights and a story they’ll be telling all October long. Jack Dweck, who heads the run club, says events like this not only add a thrilling twist to their usual runs but also strengthen the bond between members.
“I think this event in particular brought the club together in a way that I think it hasn’t before,” Dweck said. “It’s through more events like this that really bring everybody together in a social sense.”
