YONKERS, N.Y. (PIX11) -- Residents at the Palisade Towers in Yonkers will be able to cook a Thanksgiving turkey despite living without gas for the last three months.
"We are doing everything we can to provide residents with the resources, especially prior to Thanksgiving and the holidays,” said property manager Emy Vega.
Their convection ovens are not a permanent solution to the gas shutdown. But tenants said having one of them does make life easier. They have been getting by with hot plates and microwaves.
"I’m going to be 75 in a few weeks. I have to watch my diet, and there couldn’t be a better decision than a convection oven," said resident John Pheles.
Con Edison turned off the gas at the 415-unit apartment complex following a leak in the underground natural gas service lines back in August.
In September, the Yonkers Housing Authority said this to PIX11 News about a possible fix:
“Probably the cheapest fix that we had looked at previously was about $5 million. And that was just to bring the stoves online for electric,” said Wilson Kimball, the CEO of the Yonkers Housing Authority.
Vega, the property manager, told PIX11 News that hot water and heat has not been an issue.
“Right now you can see there are boilers outside, so we are just working together to resolve the issue permanently in the near future,” said Vega.
Officials are still considering switching the entire building complex to electric services, which will cost about $60 million.
