Heat advisory in Newark prompts visits to Weequahic Park splash pads

NEWARK, N.J. (PIX11) -- Newark is under an excessive heat advisory through 9 p.m. Wednesday, sending many parents and kids to the splash pads at Weequahic Park.

New Jersey students have the day off school Wednesday in observance of Juneteenth.

“We’re blowing up water balloons and we’re having a water fight,” said Aria Jackson, who was enjoying the park.

Parents and grandparents were doing their best to seek shade while their children cooled off.

“[It’s] very muggy, very humid,” said Shelia Jeter, who brought her grandson to the splash pad.

“Definitely saw the forecast,” said Newark dad Rex Torto, who brought his four-year-old son Mason to the park.

“I knew it was gonna be very hot. They have this beautiful water park at Weequahic Park, so I decided to bring him over here.”
