NEW YORK (PIX11) -- Some seniors are celebrating after learning NYCHA has restored millions of dollars in funding for security guards at dozens of senior buildings across the city.
They are thrilled to hear the news that city hall is restoring the $7 million for the unarmed security guard program in 55 NYCHA buildings.
It was back in May when PIX11 News covered a passionate tenant meeting.
Allie Eason, tenant president at the Corsi Houses in East Harlem led the fight for funding and says it’s a huge victory. In a majority of these buildings, security guards are on duty for one eight-hour shift per day.
Eason says these security guards are like family and are critical to the safety of their buildings.
NYCHA confirms the program has an annual cost of approximately $7 million.
A NYCHA spokesperson told PIX11 News, “NYCHA is so pleased that the city's arrangement of necessary funding will allow for the unarmed security guard program to continue at all senior buildings across the portfolio without any interruption in services. We are extremely grateful to the Adams administration and the New York City Council for their ongoing commitment to public housing in New York City and continued prioritization of NYCHA residents.”
