NEW YORK (PIX11) – New York State Parks and some beaches will be free Wednesday and Thursday as the region prepares for "extreme heat" and high humidity, Gov. Kathy Hochul announced Tuesday.
Some pools will also open ahead of schedule, and parks will be beefed up with new cooling features, like misters, for the hot days ahead.
“Extreme heat can be dangerous for New Yorkers, and I’m doing everything I can to help families stay safe and cool this week,” Hochul said.
A head advisory was in effect for New York City with temperatures expected to creep close to 90 degrees in the region Wednesday. By Thursday, the temperature in the city could jump above 90 degrees.
In western, central and northern New York, record temperatures are possible this week, with “feels like” temps hitting over 100 degrees by Friday, Hochul said.
In New York City, these state parks have pools and cooling features available:
- Marsha P. Johnson State Park
- Gantry Plaza State Park
- Roberto Clemente State Park
- Denny Farrell Riverbank State Park – Indoor pool also open
On Long Island, these parks will open early for swimming:
- Jones Beach State Park
- Robert Moses State Park
- Hither Hills State Park
- Sunken Meadow State Park
The Town of Oyster Bay will also open pools early and waive admission fees. In New York City, the Department of Parks and Recreation made an interactive map to find good tree cover and water.
