TRICHY: Municipal administration minister K N Nehru on Friday laid the
foundation stone
for a new
Cauvery bridge
, connecting
Srirangam island
with
Trichy
mainland.
Tamil Nadu govt
has sanctioned Rs 106 crore to develop the four-lane bridge for decongesting the vehicular movement between Srirangam and Melachinthamani (near Chathiram bus stand).
State highways department officials said the new bridge would be 545-metre-long and 17.7-metre-wide.
Out of the total Rs 106 crore fund allocated, construction work will be taken up at Rs 68 crore. Rs 30 crore was allocated for providing compensation during land acquisition. The remaining fund will be utilised to develop approach roads and a roundabout and install streetlights.
The bridge would be constructed in 18 months, officials added.
Later, K N Nehru along with the school education minister Anbil Mahesh Poyyamozhi, Trichy MP Durai Vaiko, Karur MP S Jothimani and elected representatives of assembly constituencies in Trichy district distributed welfare schemes to the tune of Rs 99.2 crore to 6,176 beneficiaries at an event held at the district collector office.
Nehru inaugurated 17 new infrastructure projects built at Rs 42.4 crore. They include a zonal corporation office near Palakkarai, an additional building for Iruthayapuram primary health centre, a new commercial complex at Marakkadai and a new crematorium near SIT College.
