EAST HARLEM, Manhattan (PIX11) -- A group of fathers is helping open up a much-needed community center at a NYCHA development in East Harlem.

The Fatherhood and Family Resource Center is coming to the Carver Houses at East 99th Street and Madison Avenue.

The fathers decided to create the resource center after parents in East Harlem spoke out about a lack of resources for children in the neighborhood.

Derek Phillips, a Harlem father who's the CEO of the Real Dads Network, was moved to take action. He said the children in the community deserve a new community center.

An unused 3,200-square-foot space in the Carver Houses will be converted into the Fatherhood and Family Resource Center. From financial literacy to yoga classes, the resource center will offer a safe place for children.

The opening of the Fatherhood and Family Resource Center is planned for September.

You can donate to the project through a GoFundMe page. You can also reach out to Phillips at [email protected]
