DOWNTOWN BROOKLYN (PIX11) -- They have the best record in the league, and probably the most enthusiastic fans as well.
We’re talking about the New York Liberty WNBA team.
To their fans, the New York liberty team is unstoppable. The number one seed clearly showed why they are on top, beating the team that destroyed their dream of being number one last year, the Las Vegas Aces in a decisive victory in the first game of the semi finals, 87 to 77.
The stars of the game Breanna Stewart and Sabrina Ionescu delivered for their fans.
“Breanna Stewart dropping 34 points, that was really huge for us,” Nico Hull, a Liberty fan, told PIX11 News. “I am really looking forward to Tuesday night.”
Another fan, Miriam Handy, added, “ They were up by 20 but then they caught up a bit, but Liberty beat them back as they always do."
The New York Liberty has been growing their fan base for years.
Ticket sales for home games at Barclays Center are up a whopping 64 percent over last year.
Many fans say this will finally be their year to win it all.
“This is it. We are going to get a championship parade,” Jack Dickson, a Liberty fan, told PIX11 News. “They need to get paid,” he added.
From long-time New York basketball fans to little girls clutching the team mascot Ellie The Elephant, it would appear the New York Liberty team has something for everyone.
“It’s been so much fun to bring my daughter and support a women's basketball team,” Katherine Penta, a Liberty fan, told PIX11 News.
Another fan, Andrew Charette, added, “They represent the diversity of Brooklyn.”
Game two is Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. here at Barclays Center and then Las Vegas on Friday.
Liberty fans say that’s all they’ll need, just three games.
