NEW YORK CITY (PIX11) – New York hasn’t voted for a Republican presidential candidate since Ronald Reagan in 1984, but in Tuesday’s election, the state’s Democratic stronghold waned.
In the presidential race, Vice President Kamala Harris won New York with 55.8% of the vote, beating President-elect Donald Trump by 11.6 percentage points. As of Wednesday afternoon, 97% of votes have been counted in New York.
In 2020, President Joe Biden had a healthier lead of 23.1 percentage points over Trump, winning New York with 60.9% of the vote. In 2016, Hillary Clinton won New York with 58.8% of the vote and Trump won 37.5% of the vote.
Here's how the presidential race shook out in New York for the last few elections:

The trend is similar in New York's U.S. Senate races. This year, Democratic incumbent Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand won with 58.4% of the vote over Republican newcomer Mike Sapraicone. It’s a drop-off from her last election in 2018 when she won with 67% of the vote.
In New York City, Tuesday’s election looked more red than in years past. Here is the Democrats’ share of the presidential vote in New York City in 2020 and 2024:

The trend is also true in New Jersey, where Harris won 51.5% of the vote on Tuesday. Biden won New Jersey with 57.3% of the vote in 2020.
