BROOKLYN, N.Y. (PIX11) -- During the prosecution rebuttal, near the very end of this trial, Assistant U.S. Attorney Mark Misorek told jurors “Father Time” solved the October 2002 murder of rap legend Jam Master Jay.
The prosecution’s explanation is that enough time passed, which gave key eyewitnesses the strength to overcome their fear of intimidation and retribution and finally implicate – in open court – the two defendants currently on trial.
“We have waited long enough. The evidence shines a light on the defense table. It is time to convict them,” Misorek told jurors.
But both defense teams took the opposite approach and portrayed time as the enemy which eroded and distorted the witness accounts and recollections of Mizell’s murder. It occurred more than two decades ago inside his Jamaica, Queens music studio.
The accused, co-defendants Karl Jordan Jr. is Mizell’s Godson, and Ronald “Tinard” Washington a childhood friend.
The alleged motive for Mizell’s execution-style murder is a falling out between him and both men over a blown cocaine deal.
There is a third accused accomplice who was mentioned frequently during this trial a man named Jay Bryant; who will be tried separately.
Both defense teams blamed Bryant alone for killing Mizell.
Susan Kellman, Washington’s defense attorney, told jurors,
“I do not know if this is screaming reasonable doubt - but it should be. This is an attempt to make a mockery of the judicial system. The government knows it was Jay Bryant, they have no case against anybody – except Jay Bryant.”
Both Washington and Jordan face murder and drug trafficking-related charges.
Jury deliberations continue, and if convicted, both Jordan and Washington face up to a maximum of life in prison.
