JAIPUR: A 48-year-old man, resident of Dausa, who died on December 21 tested positive for Covid-19 sub-variant JN.1 on Wednesday, making it the first such fatality from the new strain in the state.
He had multiple comorbidities, including tuberculosis and silicosis with left-sided pneumothorax, causing type 2 respiratory failure. The genome sequencing report which came on Wednesday showed that four persons have been infected with new Covid sub-variant. The three others infected are an infant who came from Bharatpur for treatment of other ailments, but who tested positive for Covid at JK Lon Hospital on December 21; a 43-year-old resident of

, who had undergone a surgery at SMS Hospital; and a person from Ajmer, said a senior health department official.
The deceased patient was undergoing treatment at the government-run Institute of Respiratory Diseases in Shastri Nagar where he was admitted on December 19. He had undergone treatment at the hospital earlier too and was discharged on December 14.
But his condition deteriorated and was readmitted. He died within an hour receiving the positive test report on December 21. Other than comorbidities, he was also suffering from fever, cough, shortness of breath and chest pain.
Eight others too tested positive for Covid-19 on Wednesday, taking the tally of active cases to 34. Two people recovered in 24 hours. Out of eight new cases, five tested positive in Jaipur, while one each case was reported from Bharatpur,
Jhalawar
and Jhunjhunu.
