Crowds of people came from near and far Thursday anticipating the dazzling fireworks show over the Hudson River expected tonight around 9:30 p.m.

But before the light show, a concert is set to feature some of music’s biggest acts from Wyclef Jean to Funk Master Flex and Fat Joe.

Jersey City native Charles Highsmith shared his excitement saying he’s been attending the annual festival since he was a kid. “The atmosphere is beautiful. It’s not too hot. Everybody’s enjoying themselves. They got some beautiful food. Come on down. Hang out.”

Jersey City Mayor Steven Fulop says the Independence Day celebration comes at a time when it’s needed most. “You’re in a place right now where there’s a lot of division in the country. It’s an opportunity maybe to reflect a little bit on all the things we can be thankful for and celebrate the country.”

Festival goers say they plan to revel in their day off,  soaking up the summer sun, and celebrating America’s independence.
