NEW YORK CITY (PIX11) – Temperatures are expected to reach over 90 degrees Sunday, prompting cooling centers to open across New York City.
Well over 100 community centers, schools and even museums will open Sunday to offer an air conditioned reprieve for any New Yorker struggling with the heat.
The cooling centers will open throughout all five boroughs at different times. A list of open cooling centers can be found on the NYC Cool Options website.
The city added an additional 44 cooling centers at public schools for the weekend, city officials announced Saturday. Hours at the city’s outdoor pools have been extended to close at 8 p.m. over the weekend due to high heat, officials said.
The sun’s peak hours are expected during 11 a.m. and 4 p.m., during which time locals are encouraged to drink plenty of water, rest in the shade and avoid strenuous outdoor activity.
