The Athletics' multiyear experiment in West Sacramento is now underway, and we're already seeing a hilarious consequence of having Major League teams play in a minor-league stadium.
It's an extremely long walk (or run) to the restroom.
The Athletics opened their time at Sutter Health Park on Monday in a blowout loss to the Cubs. But among the quirks of the temporary home were the clubhouse locations. The home clubhouse, which is actually nice, is located beyond left field. The not-so-nice visitors clubhouse is located beyond left-center field.
There is no direct clubhouse-to-dugout access like you'd see in every MLB stadium. So, when a player needs to use the restroom or grab something from the clubhouse, it's an unavoidable spectacle. The Cubs broadcast amazingly dubbed it, "The Walk of Shame."
It’s got a name… “the walk of shame.”
Now imagine Judge doing this, 🤦🏽♂️. pic.twitter.com/QLifcGCsGW
At the very least, they need to get a bullpen cart or something. That's so funny, though.
And while we can laugh about that whole clubhouse situation from the outside, it sounds like visiting players are *not* fans of the Sacramento digs at all. Via USA TODAY Sports:
“I think it’s so stupid that we have to play at a Triple-A stadium," Cubs veteran reliever Ryan Brasier told USA TODAY Sports, “when they have maybe not a perfectly good ballpark in Oakland, but a big-league ballpark. I would have much rather play in Oakland than Sacramento, but I guess it doesn’t really matter what we want."
Teams could have four-plus years of that too. It's going to take some getting used to.
