BROOKLYN, N.Y. (PIX11) -- Tuesday is Primary Election Day in New York, a day that is especially important in the City, where the majority of the districts are heavily Democratic-- so the Primary winner is very likely to end up representing voters in Albany or in Washington.
While New York's 16th Congressional District in the Bronx and Westchester has gotten much of the attention, there are other closely contested races-- particularly at the State Assembly level.
On Manhattan Avenue in Greenpoint, PIX 11 met several people plugged in to Tuesday's Democratic Primary with strong opinions about Assemblywoman Emily Gallagher.
Gallagher rose to represent the 50th District with support from Democratic Socialists of America and other left-leaning groups. Her challengers are Andrew Bodiford and Anathea Simpkins.
It is on a similar story along a bustling stretch of Roosevelt Avenue in Flushing.
There is fiercely competitive Democratic primary here too. District 40 Assemblyman Ron Kim, a progressive champion, most well-known for taking on former Governor Andrew Cuomo, is trying to hold off Yi Andy Chen and Dao Yin in a district that is becoming increasingly more moderate.
Meanwhile, in Corona and East Elmhurst there is once in a generation contest to replace Jeffrion Aubry in the 35th Assembly District. He is retiring after serving more than 30 years in office.
Vying for the Democratic nomination are Hiram Monserrate, who was expelled from the State Senate after a domestic assault conviction, and later sent to jail on federal corruption charges--and longtime community activist and civic leader Larinda Hooks.
