Michigan State baseball made the trip from East Lansing to South Bend on Wednesday to face off with Notre Dame in a midweek affair. Unfortunately for the Spartans, the fell to the Fighting Irish in the matchup, 9-6.
The opportunity for a big resume boosting win was there, but a huge second inning was too much for MSU to overcome. Notre Dame plated all nine of their runs in the second frame, and despite their best efforts, MSU could now claw back into the game.
Will Shannon led the way offensively for the Spartans with a 2-for-5 performance, while Sam Busch had a couple of RBIs. The Spartans had seven pitchers take the mound in the game, while Notre Dame had eight. Ryan Szczepaniak got the loss during Wednesday's efforts.
Needing to put this past themselves quickly, Michigan State returns to action this weekend for their first Big Ten home series against Illinois. A pivotal series on the continued push to the Big Ten Tournament for the Spartans.
