NEW DELHI:
Italian tennis
sensation
Jannik Sinner
continued his impressive run at the
Australian Open
, reinforcing his title credentials with a dominant straight-sets victory over 26th-seed
Sebastian Baez
.
The 22-year-old fourth seed showcased his prowess on the court, dropping just four games in the one-sided encounter that lasted one hour and 52 minutes, securing a 6-0, 6-1, 6-3 win.
Sinner's outstanding performance in the third round sets the stage for a fourth-round clash against either Russian 15th seed
Karen Khachanov
or Czech player Tomas Machac. Notably, Sinner remains unbeaten in sets throughout his three matches in the tournament.
Expressing his satisfaction with his form, Sinner mentioned, "Generally, I'm playing really well and feeling great here. I'm just happy with how I'm feeling right now."
The Italian opted not to participate in a warm-up tournament this year but has showcased remarkable prowess on the Melbourne courts.
Having enjoyed a breakthrough 2023, including winning his first Masters title in Toronto and reaching the championship match at the ATP Finals, Sinner enters the Australian Open in peak form.
His achievements last year also included leading Italy to the
Davis Cup
title, defeating the likes of
Novak Djokovic
along the way.
Sinner's performance in 2022 at the Australian Open saw him reach the quarter-finals, and he exited in the fourth round in the previous edition. However, with his surge in the rankings and current form, Sinner has higher expectations for this season's campaign in Melbourne.
