PROSPECT HEIGHTS, Brooklyn (PIX11) – In less than 24 hours, the superstars of the fashion and entertainment world will be walking the red carpet at the super-exclusive Met Gala in Manhattan.
A far more inclusive gala, The People's Ball, was held at the Brooklyn Public Library on Sunday. Close to 1,000 people showed up to celebrate the theme of "style is a revolution."
DJ Fritzo, Singer Storm Marrero, host Souleo, and the costume designer for Black Panther Ruth E Carter were honored. This event was the brainchild of Jakab Orsos.
"You can show your best self and you can show yourself to the world," Ordos, the special events director of the Brooklyn Public Library, told PIX11 News. "And enjoy that five minutes of fame."
Some of the outfits created for the event include a skirt made with banned books.
"The color purple, the kite runner I don't understand why books are banned anyway," Alicia Rigues, the creator of the banned book skirt, told PIX11 News.
Jen, a shoemaker with Happy Everything Art, made an eye-catching hat. A grandmother from Trinidad created an ensemble for herself and her 8-year-old granddaughter, Imani.
