NEW YORK (PIX11) – New York State officials issued an air quality health advisory on Saturday following a red flag warning on Friday.

The air quality index will likely reach pollution levels of up to 101 to 150, according to NotifyNYC. The higher the AQI, the greater the health concern, the National Weather Service says.

The high AQI can make breathing difficult for people who are sensitive to air pollution. Older adults, children, and people with heart and lung conditions are most at risk, according to the New York City Health Department.

Health officials recommend the following to stay safe from high levels of air pollution.

Air pollution safety tips:

  • Stay inside if possible
  • Limit strenuous outdoor physical activity
  • Limit time outside and take breaks
  • Wear a well-fitting N95 or KN95
  • Use a portable air cleaner
  • Talk to your healthcare provider for additional guidance

The air quality health advisory and red flag warning come amid raging wildfires in New Jersey and brush fires throughout New York City.
