EAST FLATBUSH, Brooklyn (PIX11) -- Althea Lawson, speaking from her Brooklyn hospital bed, is still in pain after being shot in her left arm Monday night.

"I feel - little better than yesterday," Lawson said. 

The 84-year-old mother of seven has conquered stage four cancer and now dodged death.

"I heard pow pow pow pow pow. By the time I looked, I saw blood running down my hand. I said, 'My god,'" she said.

Two neighbors rushed to her side, one providing a shirt to wrap around her ar.

"We ran over... She was sitting there bleeding out. He took off his shirt and instructed me to tie it on her hand," a neighbor said.

The temporary tourniquet was effective. Lawson sustained two bullet wounds, likely from gang members who missed their intended target, according to police sources.

"They're running up on their intended targets shooting and running after them while they're shooting," Chief Joseph Kenny explained after viewing surveillance video of the incident.

Gang violence, attributed to the same crew, has plagued the neighborhood, leaving innocent victims like Lawson in its wake, including a 67-year-old woman in January. 

Lawson recalled hearing frequent gunfire from her home.

"All the time, you hear shots fired in your house," she said.

This survivor credits a higher power.

"Thank God for Jesus. He rescued me, and he saved me," she said.

Doctors and family members anticipate Lawson's recovery will take some time before she can resume her activities, including cooking Jamaican food for the community again.
