BHOPAL: A controversy broke out on Tuesday after
Congress
realised - though nearly six months late - that a portrait of Jawaharlal Nehru had been removed from the wall behind the Speaker's chair in the Madhya Pradesh assembly and replaced with one of Dr Bhimrao Ambedkar.
The other side of the wall has a portrait of Mahatma Gandhi. The assembly administration says Nehru's portrait was shifted to another hall nearly six months ago.
During the house proceedings over the last two days, there was no word of protest from Congress MLAs till the change was highlighted by a section of the media on Tuesday.
Outgoing
PCC
president Kamal Nath, who has not been present in the house for the last two days, tweeted: "Removing the portrait of a great freedom fighter, the first Prime Minister of India, builder of modern India, from the assembly is highly condemnable. I welcome the installation of the portrait of Dr Bhimrao Ambedkar. Baba Saheb's portrait could have been installed at a respectable place in the assembly but for this, Pt. Nehru's portrait was deliberately removed."
Nath said he had announced the installation of the tallest statue of Ambedkar in Madhya Pradesh.
