25% fall in traffic challans in city on New Year’s eve

CHANDIGARH/PANCHKULA/MOHALI: Chandigarh reported 25% fall in number of

traffic challans

issued on New Year’s eve (December 31, 2023) as compared to slips issued on the last day of 2022.
The UT police issued 978 slips on December 31, 2023, as against 1,317 challans issued on the same day in 2022. On New Year’s eve in 2021, the UT police had challaned 583 traffic violators.
Special checkposts were set up throughout the city between 6pm on Sunday to 6am of Monday. While 463 violators were challaned for jumping red light or dangerous driving, 136 were issued slips for overspeeding, 96 for drunken driving, 41 for driving without helmet, 19 for wrong parking, and 107 for miscellaneous offences. Besides, police also impounded 57 vehicles on New Year’s eve.
Chandigarh police received 467 emergency calls. As many as 195 incidents of different nature were reported in the city. Police reported 55 incidents of quarrel, 14 accidents, five incidents of firecrackers nuisance, 11 complaints of nuisance, three fire incidents and 107 other miscellaneous incidents. All these incidents were reported between 8 pm of Sunday to 8 am of Monday

Mohali

police challaned 423 traffic violators on the New Year’s eve, out of which 59 were issued slips for driving under the influence of liquor. As many as 11 vehicles were impounded in the night, Mohali traffic police SP Harinder Singh Mann said.
He said out of 423 traffic challans on December 31, maximum violations were of wrong side driving (120 challans), 44 for wrong parking; 39 for driving without helmet.
