2 slashed after high school graduation ceremony on Long Island: officials

UNIONDALE, N.Y. (PIX11) -- Two people were slashed on Long Island after a high school graduation at the Hofstra University campus, according to officials.

The slashing occurred outside of the David S. Mack Sports and Exhibition Complex in Uniondale. The ceremony was for graduating seniors of Academy Charter High Schools. Five men in masks attacked a guest who attended the graduation ceremony, officials said.

“After the conclusion of our graduation program celebrating the accomplishments of our scholars, as the graduates and their families were leaving the building, five masked men attacked a guest who attended the graduation," a statement from Academy Charter High Schools read. "Our security team is cooperating with Nassau County Police and Hofstra Public safety officers.”

Officials believe the slashing was related to a domestic dispute. The guest was slashed in the leg. The student who he was a guest of intervened and was also slashed in the ear. Both victims were transported to an area hospital to be treated for their injuries, officials said.

Hofstra University and Nassau County police were not immediately available to comment.

Officials said all guests who attended the graduation ceremony passed through metal detectors, and the slashing took place outside of the graduation venue.
