2023, potentially surpassing its previous single-day record. This surge in weddings is attributed to the date's unique numerical pattern, 12/31/23, which repeats as 1-2-3, 1-2-3. This pattern, known as a "specialty date" in the
Las Vegas wedding industry
, is expected to draw a significant number of couples.
The current record for the most marriages in a single day in Las Vegas is 4,492, set on July 7, 2007. Another notable specialty date was November 11, 2011, when 3,125 couples tied the knot. These specialty dates are highly popular for weddings due to their memorable and unique sequences.
New Year's Eve, already a time for grand celebrations, adds to the allure of this specialty date. Melody Willis-Williams, president of Vegas Weddings, which operates multiple venues, emphasized the combined appeal of the specialty date and the festive nature of New Year's Eve. She noted that such dates are always hugely popular, but tying it with New Year's Eve makes it even more special.
“It’s a double whammy,” Melody Willis-Williams told AP. “Anytime you get these specialty dates, they’re always hugely popular. But tie that in with New Year’s Eve and it’s a showstopper.”
Typically, New Year's Eve attracts between 450 to 550 couples to wed in Las Vegas, a trend observed since 2018. However, this year is expected to be different. Vegas Weddings, for instance, is fully booked for midnight across its various venues. The company alone anticipates marrying more than 120 couples on New Year's Eve, with five of these weddings scheduled as the clock counts down to midnight.
Clark County Clerk Lynn Marie Goya highlighted that couples married on specialty dates in Las Vegas often describe these dates as "magic dates" that are easy to remember. She also pointed out the appeal of a group celebration dynamic, where the collective excitement of couples getting married enhances the individual experience of each couple.
“I think the celebration that has a group dynamic is really appealing,” Goya told AP. “When everyone is in line and they’re all getting married and excited about being in love, it just enhances their own experience.”
