The New York Yankees are again making changes in their roster, and this time its right-hand pitcher, Clarke Schmidt. The pitcher was set to start for the Yankees in the upcoming match against the Tampa Bay Rays. However, his potential injury has forced the Yankees to put him on rest for a few days. So, who’s going to start instead of Schmidt? And how serious is the pitcher’s injury? We have some insights here!

Clarke Schmidt put on rest for few days

The New York Yankees are set to face the Tampa Bay Rays on May 3, 2025, and had Schmidt on their roster. However, a slight soreness on the left side forced the team to put Schmidt on rest.

Though the soreness is not that serious, Schmidt and the Yankees are not taking any changes. The main reason behind this is when Schmidt made his debut this year in mid-April, he was already suffering from rotator cuff tendinitis, which is not to be taken lightly. Clarke assured that he will be back to the mound by Tuesday to face the San Diego Padres.

Previously in 2024, Schmidt had to limit his pitches due to lat strain. Even after that, Clarke showed great performance and ended the season with 2.85 ERA. However, 2025 has been tough on the pitcher, thanks to his injury, for which Schmidt’s ERA came to 5.52.

Who will start instead of Clarke Schmidt?

Now that Clarke is out of the roster, the Yankees are bringing Ryan Yarbrough as their pitcher. Now, this might turn out to be interesting as Yarbrough was a part of the Tampa Bay Rays from 2018 to 2022. Facing his old team might turn out to be interesting for fans from both teams.
Coming to Ryan’s statistics, the pitcher has a 3.86 ERA, 1.29 WHIP, and a total of 17 strikeouts, all in 2025. His stats seem hopeful, plus being a left-hand pitcher might serve as an advantage against the Tampa Bay Rays, as the said team is still struggling with lefties.
However, fans are hoping that Schmidt will return to the mound on Tuesday, completely fit, and show his magic against the Padres. For now, all eyes are on Ryan Yarbrough, and how he handles the pitches.
