Elon Musk's X social media platform has introduced passkey support for iOS users in the US. Passkeys are secure, individually generated credentials that replace traditional passwords. The feature is expected to expand to other regions and Android users in the future.
Elon Musk-owned social media platform
X
has announced that
passkey support
is now rolling out. According to a post on X by the company’s safety team, passkey support is now available for
iOS users
. “Today we’re excited to launch Passkeys as a
login option
for our US-based users on iOS. A passkey is a new, easy to use, and
secure
way to log in to your account - all from your device.
Passkeys are more secure than traditional passwords since they’re individually generated by your device for each account,” said the company. As mentioned, the feature is currently available for
iPhone users
and that too only in the US. It’s not clear when the feature will roll out to other regions.
What are passkeys?
A passkey serves as an online credential associated with your account. Instead of logging into your account with a username and password, your private passkey automatically authenticates your account using the server’s public passkey, allowing you to log in without the need to type it in. Passkeys are automatically generated, removing the need to remember login information and is securely backed up for easy recovery, noted X.
How to setup passkeys for X?
To use your current passkey across all your devices, make sure you have completed setting up a passkey on the original device. So long as you are signed into your iCloud account, passkeys automatically sync across your iOS devices using iCloud Keychain. When you sign in to your iCloud account on a new device, that device will join the iCloud keychain associated with your account.
Passkeys are becoming prevalent as the likes of Google, Amazon have also rolled out support for them fortheir apps and services.
