Ponda: With the
monsoon
progressing over the catchment area of Khandepar and Kalem rivers, the
water resources department
(
WRD
) has opened the gates of its barrage at Opa Water Works to let excess rainwater out to avoid flooding on the riverbank of Khandepar village.
Khandepar river
has 13 bandharas and
Kalem river
has six. The bandharas together store over 40 lakh cubic metres of water.
It is stocked to augment the dipping Khandepar level during summers.
The incessant rain has raised the turbidity of raw water in Khandepar river. Opa Water Works recorded a river water turbidity of 100 NTU since Saturday evening. Water containing 1mg of finely divided silica per litre has a turbidity of 1 NTU and up to 50 NTU is considered normal.
Jaywant Prabhu, an assistant engineer of the water division who oversees potable water supply to Ponda and Tiswadi talukas, said the phenomenon is common during heavy rainfall and the water is safe for consumption.
“Water is released to consumers only after proper filtration at the Opa water treatment plant,” he added.
