A "mentally unstable" woman from Bijnor in Uttar Pradesh, has been arrested for hacking her four-year-old son to death. Aadesh Devi first slit the baby's throat and then tried to burn the body on a stove inside the house, the police said on Wednesday.

The incident came to light when Devi's husband, Kapil Kumar, returned home from work to find their son dead. Shocked and devastated, Kumar immediately called family members for help.

When family members arrived, Devi, armed with a shovel, chased them and Kumar away from the house.

Kumar informed the police about the gruesome incident. Additional Superintendent of Police (Rural) Ram Arj and Circle Officer Chandpur Bharat Sonkar arrived at the scene. They sent the child's body for post-mortem and registered a murder case against Devi based on Kumar's complaint.

Despite police efforts to interrogate her, Devi remained silent. Meanwhile, her brother informed the police that she is "mentally unstable."

Further investigation is still underway.

In a similar incident that happened in Maharashtra's Nagpur, where a woman allegedly killed her three-year-old daughter after a fight with her husband and roamed around 4 km on streets with the body before informing police about the incident, officials said.
