Another Montclair officer returned fire and shot the suspect, who authorities identified as 39-year-old Maryann Swain.

Medrano and Swain were both hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries, authorities said. Medrano has since been released from the hospital. Swain remains hospitalized.

Swain was charged with aggravated assault, endangering the welfare of a child, unlawful possession of a weapon, and possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, according to the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office.

Witnesses said the suspect is a mother of two children who moved into the neighborhood about six months ago.

"I was walking up to my house and the officer said, 'Run, run, run!' said Marilyn Sprague, a witness. "I'm still asking myself what made her do something like that. I just can't comprehend it at all."
