Woman, 77, struck by tractor-trailer on Long Island highway dies: police

NORTH BELLPORT, N.Y. (PIX11) – A 77-year-old woman was struck by a tractor-trailer in North Bellport Tuesday morning, according to the Suffolk County Police Department.

Police say 77-year-old Maureen Howley was walking on the right side of Sunrise Highway east of exit 55 around 1:50 a.m. when the tractor-trailer struck her.

Howley was transported to a local hospital in Patchogue where she was pronounced dead. The driver of the trailer, 30-year-old Laura Valcich, was not injured and remained at the scene. 

New York State Department of Transportation officers performed a safety check on the truck at the scene, according to police.

Investigators are asking anyone with information to call the Fifth Squad at 631-854-8552.
