Why IITs may not declare top salary packages during placements

The Indian Institutes of Technology (

IITs

) are reportedly considering not disclosing the highest annual packages in their placement reports. According to a report in Indian Express, these reports will focus on mean and median salary figures instead.
The consensus on this reportedly emerged during a recent meeting of the All IITs Placement Committee (AIPC).

During the meeting, the recent placement report from IIT-Bombay placement which claimed over 85 offers surpassing an annual package of Rs 1 crore is said to have been discussed. The AIPC comprises heads of career development or training and placement cells of all 23 IITs as members, who meet at regular intervals to share their recruitment experiences and problems.
On January 4, IIT-Bombay had announced that the first phase of placements, which concluded on December 20 last year, saw a total of 1,340 offers. It further added there were 85 offers of annual salary packages surpassing Rs 1 crore, marking a significant increase from the 25 such offers made last year. The average annual salary package also increased from Rs 23.26 lakh to Rs 24.02 lakh, the report claimed. Incidentally, in a corrigendum issued on Wednesday (January 10), IIT-Bombay revised the number of Rs 1 crore-plus salary packages in the first phase of placement to 22. The clarification cited "technical error" for the wrong data. The AIPC meeting was held a day after the announcement.
Of these 22 1 crore plus offers, three were domestic and 19 international.

Last month, ITT Delhi too announced its placement numbers. IIT Delhi students have received around 1,050 job offers, including pre-placement offers, with nearly 1,000 students being selected after the conclusion of Phase-I of the placement season for the academic year 2023–24, the institute said in a statement.
Over 50 international offers were received by students from around 20 organisations across geographies spanning Hong Kong, Japan, the Netherlands, Singapore, South Korea, Taiwan, the United Arab Emirates, the United Kingdom, and the United States. Top recruiters on the campus in terms of the number of students offered jobs include Air India, Microsoft, Texas Instruments, Goldman Sachs, Bajaj Auto, and Ola Electric.
