Nuri Sahin has been named as the new head coach of Borussia Dortmund on a three-year contract starting from July 1, the Bundesliga club said in a statement on Friday. BVB will announce the other members of Sahin's coaching staff in due course, it added. On Thursday, Borussia Dortmund announced that Edin Terzic would leave the head coach role with immediate effect after asking for his contract to be terminated.
Nuri Sahin played 274 competitive matches (26 goals) for Borussia Dortmund in his professional career, celebrated the German championship with BVB in 2011 and won the DFB Cup with his team in 2017. From 2021 to 2023 he was team manager of the Turkish first division club Antalyaspor. In January 2024, Sahin returned to Strobelallee as an assistant coach.
"It is a great honour for me to be the coach of Borussia Dortmund. I would like to thank everyone in charge at the club for the trust they have placed in me. I am really looking forward to my job at BVB. From day one, we will do everything we can with a lot of energy and great passion to achieve the maximum possible success," Nuri Sahin said via an official statement.
Lars Ricken, the sports director of the club said that Sahin had worked extremely hard to start his coaching career and deserved a shot at the position.
"We are delighted that we can hand over responsibility as head coach to Nuri Sahin, a representative of the younger generation. He has worked hard over the past few years to prepare for a coaching career, will take on his new role with great dedication and will continue to develop our team. As former teammates, we will work together with trust and ambition. Nuri knows the club, its employees and the BVB DNA both as a player and as an assistant coach. We are convinced that Nuri is the right coach for us," Ricken said via the statement.
EDIN TERZIC'S EXIT
Bundesliga side Borussia Dortmund had announced that manager Edin Terzic has resigned from his role at the club with immediate effect on June 13, 2024. Dortmund claimed that Terzic believed that a new era should start for the German giants.
Terzic released a statement confirming his resignation via mutual contract termination with Dortmund, revealing that his decision had been set since the side's loss to Real Madrid in the UEFA Champions League final on June 2 at the iconic Wembley Stadium in London, England. The sudden nature of this announcement left the football fans surprised, specifically due to the string of success the club had found in the latter of the season.
