NEW YORK CITY (PIX11) – Applications for Section 8 housing vouchers are briefly open for the first time in years in New York City, but who can apply?
You do not have to be a New York City resident to apply for the Section 8 Housing Voucher program, a federally funded program that offers rental vouchers to low-income families searching for housing.
And if you live in NYCHA housing, you can still apply for the program – though the vouchers apply only to housing on the private market. You do not have to be a NYCHA resident to apply.
U.S. citizens and some eligible non-citizens, like permanent residents and individuals with refugee status, can apply for the program. Find out which non-citizen statuses are eligible on NYCHA’s website.
Applicants must be 18 years old and at least one member of an applying family must be a U.S. citizen or eligible non-resident. The household’s gross income must be under the area median income, which for a household of three, is $69,900 per year. For a household of one, the income is $54,350 per year.
Some people, like mobility impaired people living in inaccessible housing and people over 62 years old, will have priority over other applicants, according to NYCHA.
This is the first time since 2009 the city has accepted Section 8 Housing Voucher applications, according to city officials. Within hours of the applications opening, over 150,000 people applied to be on the waitlist, according to NYCHA officials.
Applications will remain open only until 11:59 p.m. on June 9.
