NEW YORK (PIX11) – New York will soon be plunged into darkness — if only for a few minutes — as the total solar eclipse nears.

Many people are traveling upstate to areas in the so-called path of totality to experience the rare celestial event. But if you cannot make it, you'll have to wait quite a while for the next total solar eclipse, which is in 20 years, according to NASA.

Am I in the total or partial eclipse zone?

The next total solar eclipse that can be seen in the U.S. isn't until Aug. 23, 2044.

At least you'll have some more time to plan your travel. The next total solar eclipse will only be viewable in North Dakota and Montana, according to the National Park Service.

If you'd rather wait to see the next total solar eclipse in New York, you could be waiting for 55 years. The next total solar eclipse in New York won't take place until 2079, according to the New York State Department of Education.

If you're willing to spend a little more money on travel, there will be a total solar eclipse in Spain, Greenland and Iceland in 2026, according to reporting from TIME Magazine.
