NEW DELHI:
Sanju Samson
's journey in cricket has been marked not only by his talent but also by his admiration for the legendary
Mahendra Singh Dhoni
. At the tender age of 19, Samson was included in the India squad and travelled to England (India's tour of England in 2014), an experience that allowed him to share the dressing room with none other than Dhoni himself.
Despite his youth, Sanju didn't shy away from seizing the opportunity to learn from one of the game's greats. He peppered Dhoni with questions and eagerly soaked in every tip and insight the veteran had to offer during the tour, seizing the opportunity to take as many leaves out of the veteran cricketer's book.
Now, Sanju Samson, who was included in the ODI and T20I squads but didn't get the chance to make his debut on the tour, reflects on the learnings from Dhoni.
"For me, the respect for Mahi bhai has been from the day he started playing for the country. I remember being in Trivandrum watching his games and like wow the way he started. I have followed him closely since and I have been a huge fan of him," Samson told Star Sports.
"When I was 19 years old, I was selected in Team India as the second wicketkeeper during India's tour of England. He was there too. During that tour, I got a chance to spend a lot of time with MS Dhoni and also ask him a lot of questions, sitting at the back seat where he sits," Samson
Samson, who is currently leading Rajasthan Royals in the
IPL 2024
, has been included in the 15-member India squad for the upcoming T20 World Cup, to be played in the US and West Indies.
