has announced that it is rolling out the “search by date” function for personal and group chats on Android devices. The feature, which was already available on other platforms including iOS, Mac desktop and WhatsApp Web, will allow users to search a specific message, photo or video sent on a particular date.
Facebook parent company Meta’s co-founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg shared the announcement on his WhatsApp channel.
“When you realize you've got the perfect response in an old chat…” he said, sharing a video of him searching for an old chat about Karaoke. “Credit to WhatsApp's new search by date feature,” he added.
Notably, users can only search for a chat on a particular date instead of specifying a date range. “Ideal for revisiting a message that made you smile, or double checking when you sent information to someone, searching by date makes your chats easier to navigate,” the company announced
How to use search messages by date feature
To use the feature on your Android phone, users can:
- Go to a personal or group chat by tapping on the contact or the group name.
- To search by date, tap on the “Search” icon and you will notice a “calendar” icon

“Don’t forget you can also look for media, links and docs within your chats,” WhatsApp said.
To search for a specific photo in the group, users can:
- Click into any chat
- Tap the contact or group name at the top
- Click ‘Media Links and Docs’ to toggle between the three.
