WESTCHESTER COUNTY, N.Y. (PIX11) -- Aubrey Phillibert grabbed every bag of ice melt he could get his hands on. He wants to stock up.
“The weather is difficult to forecast and it’s unpredictable, so I want to be able to be prepared in the event that we get inclement weather. And it really wasn’t forecasted,” said Phillibert.
While the storm was predicted for the Northeast days ago, the Westchester region did not have any immediate alerts, but that has changed. Now, it can see anywhere between 7 inches to a foot of snow. The city of New Rochelle’s public works department also had to update its strategy, bringing in crews early to get a head start on the brining and salting of roads.
“It's a little difficult with these types of storms, when it starts with rain, sleet, a mixture of precipitation is a little more difficult," said Will Melendez, commissioner of Public Works New Rochelle.
Commissioner Will Melendez said his crews will be treating the roads overnight through Tuesday morning. He’s asking residents to stay off the roads and limit street parking when possible so trucks have a clear path to get to main and side streets quickly.
“That's one misconception I see out there that it looks safe to drive. Even though it looks like the road is clear, you might hit black ice and stop like that because of the temperature drops,” he said.
Despite the warnings, some say they are not worried about what’s to come.
“I think this is nothing because back in the day we used to have snow up to our neck. Now it’s like a little bit of snow, everybody goes crazy," said Howie Miller. "I don’t worry about it. I just knock off a little snow and keep it moving."
Yonkers announced that all of its schools will be closed on Tuesday, but each district will make the call individually.
