NEW DELHI: India opener
Yashasvi Jaiswal
won the
ICC
Men's Player of the Month title for February 2024, beating competition from Sri Lankan opener
Pathum Nissanka
and seasoned New Zealand veteran
Kane Williamson
.
Jaiswal has had one of the best starts to an international career of any player, and the figures indicate that he has the potential to be among the world's best Test openers.
Jaiswal is now leading the ICC
World Test Championship
in runs scored, and two brilliant double hundreds in back-to-back Test matches in February have helped him along.
In the five-Test series at home against England that was a part of the World Test Championship cycle,
Jaiswal
was at the top of his game. He hit a massive 219 in the first innings of the second Test in Vizag and then went on to record a double century in the second innings of the next Test in Rajkot, which helped India seize the lead in the series.
India rallied from a defeat in the opening Test of the series due to Jaiswal's knocks.
During his effort in Rajkot, the young Indian opener tied the all-time record for the most sixes in an innings during a Test, setting numerous other milestones in February.
After Sir Donald Bradman and
Vinod Kambli
, he became the third youngest batter in history to register two double hundreds in
Test cricket
when he scored back-to-back double centuries at the age of 22 years and 49 days.
In the three Test matches he played in, Jaiswal finished February with incredible figures of 560 runs at an average of 112 runs per game, including 20 sixes.
To his credit, he continued to play well into March, becoming the second-quickest Indian to reach the 1000 Test run milestone.
The Indian cricket board (
BCCI
) shared a video on X featuring Jaiswal talking about getting the ICC award:
"I'm really happy to achieve ICC award and I hope I will be getting more in future," Jaiswal said after he was informed about the win. "It's one of the best and this is my first five-match series.
"I really enjoyed it, the way I have played and the way it's been and we won the series by 4-1. It's been an incredible experience with all my mates And I really enjoyed it."
Jaiswal also rated his Rajkot knock of 214* has his crowning achievement. "I think when I celebrated my double century in Rajkot, I think that was something which I really enjoyed and felt it. And I was, I was living," he added.
