succumbed to an embarrassing defeat in the Boxing Day Test inside three days in Centurion, losing to a fiery South Africa by an innings and 32 runs.
As India suffered a shock collapse in the second innings,
Rohit Sharma
and co. crashed to 131 all out in 34.1 overs.
Barring a couple of batters, everyone else were dismissed for single-digit scores as Nandre Burger led the rout of India on his debut.
However, despite the loss,
Virat Kohli
stood out for the team and battled his way 76 before getting dismissed as the final wicket.
As a disappointed Kohli was headed back to the dressing room, skipper Rohit Sharma was seen appreciating the batter's valiant effort with applause and a pat on the back.
India quest to conquer the 'final frontier' came down crashing with the heavy defeat in Centurion.
In the two-Test series, South Africa now have an unassailable 1-0 lead.
The second and final Test will start from January 3 in Cape Town.
