In a surprising move,
Meta
CEO
Mark Zuckerberg
took to Instagram to directly compare his company's newest
VR headset
,
Quest 3
, with
Apple
's highly anticipated
Vision Pro
. His verdict? "I don't just think Quest is the better value, I think Quest is the better product, period."
Zuckerberg, filmed using the Quest 3's passthrough camera, highlighted key differences between the two devices. He praised the Quest 3's lighter weight (120 grams lighter) and wider field of view, claiming it offers greater comfort and immersion for longer sessions. Additionally, he emphasised the flexibility of both physical hand controllers and hand tracking offered by the Quest 3, contrasting it with Vision Pro's reliance on eye tracking.
While acknowledging the Vision Pro's superior entertainment capabilities, Zuckerberg highlighted the Quest's vast library of immersive content, particularly for social VR experiences. He further emphasised the significant price difference, with the Quest 3 costing a fraction of the Vision Pro's $3,499 price tag. Zuckerberg didn’t miss the opportunity to point out that Quest 3 is “seven times less expensive” than Apple Vision Pro.
This direct comparison marks a bold move, igniting the competition between tech giants vying for dominance in the burgeoning VR market. Whether Zuckerberg's claims hold true and how consumers respond remain to be seen.
As the
AR and VR market
continues to evolve, competition among tech giants like Meta and Apple is expected to intensify, driving further advancements and enhancements in hardware, software, and user experiences.
What Zuckerberg didn’t mention is that this is Apple’s first attempt at a headset where Meta has been at it for a while now. The high price tag might be a big deterrent but Apple certainly have more than few shots in its arsenal. Apple has control over software and hardware and experts expect that the Vision Pro will evolve and rumours also suggest an affordable avatar of the headset too will arrive. Meta does stand to gain as well because more competition means, buyers do have alternatives other than the Vision Pro to look at.
