Video: Woman disrupts wedding reception in Bhubaneswar, accuses groom of betrayal

A wedding reception in Odisha’s capital took a dramatic turn after a woman arrived with the police and claimed the groom had deceived her with false promises of marriage. A video of the incident has gone viral on social media.

Tension gripped a Kalyan Mandap under Dhauli Police Station limits in Bhubaneswar on Sunday night, as the woman confronted the groom during his reception.

According to her, she had entered into a formal engagement, known locally as nirbandha, with the same man, but he had gone on to marry someone else without her knowledge.

The woman, accompanied by police, reached the venue midway through the celebrations and demanded answers. In full public view, she accused the groom of emotional exploitation and cheating. She also claimed he had taken Rs 5 lakh from her during the course of their relationship.

The confrontation caused panic amongst guests. The groom was eventually escorted from the stage and taken to the police station for questioning.

In the now-viral video, the woman can be seen thrashing and beating the groom as people intervene to stop her.

Following the incident, complaints were registered at both Lingaraj and Women’s (Mahila) Police Stations, as parts of the incident reportedly took place at different locations.

Eyewitnesses said the woman accused the groom of cutting ties without any explanation, despite years of courtship and an exchanged promise of marriage. She alleged that he ignored her calls and messages in the days leading up to the wedding.

The police have initiated an inquiry into the matter, verifying the woman’s claims. They are examining whether the case falls under sections related to breach of trust and cheating, particularly if the claims of financial and emotional exploitation are proven.

Meanwhile, both parties were taken to Lingaraj Police Station for further discussion. According to the woman’s father, a compromise had been reached in the presence of police officials.
