MASSAPEQUA, Long Island (PIX11) -- A man attempting to sell a Rolex on Facebook Marketplace is seen on video jumping on the hood of the car of a man allegedly trying to steal the luxury watch.
Steve Mauro, 45, set up the meeting to sell the watch in front of his home for $8,000. Police said after the suspect looked the watch over, he agreed to buy it and asked Mauro to walk over to his car to get the money.
Mauro tried to get into the suspect's car, but the passenger door was locked. Mauro told police he tried to run the car to the driver's side of the vehicle. That's when police said the suspect put his car in reverse before driving forward, hitting Mauro and knocking him to the ground. He got back up and jumped on the hood of the suspect's car before falling off as the suspect drove away with the Rolex.
"There is a similar scam that is going on in NYC with the same type of vehicle and physical description. We're working with NYC right now to try to run that down," Nassau Police Commissioner Patrick Ryder said.
Mauro was treated for minor injuries to his knee, elbow and hand, according to police.
Police describe the suspect as a man around 5'10" with long brown hair, around 30 years old, in a gray Honda SUV.
