NEW YORK CITY (PIX11) -- As freezing temperatures persist in the tri-state area, veterinarians are reminding owners to consider their pets.

Veterinarians warn that when the temperature dips below 40, it is encouraged to bring all pets inside. With the inclement weather and snow, roads and sidewalks are covered in salt and other chemicals that can be dangerous for pets.

Why do pigeons stay in NYC during winter?

For dogs that won't wear shoes, owners can massage petroleum jelly into their paws before walks to protect them.

Another potential danger is antifreeze, it can leak or spill and its sweet taste makes it very appealing for pets. Veterinarians say that if a pet has ingested antifreeze to get them to a veterinarian immediately.
