A portion of an under-construction bridge across the Manair river in the Peddapalli district in Telangana collapsed on the intervening night of Monday and Tuesday. Two cement girders of the bridge fell due to strong winds. As the incident happened late at night, no casualties were reported.
A marriage party had a lucky escape as the bus they were traveling by crossed the road under the bridge just a minute before the concrete structure caved in.
The estimated cost of the bridge, whose foundation was laid in 2016 and was expected to be completed within a year, was Rs 46 crore. Angry locals said the bridge couldn't be completed even eight years later as the contractor stopped work mid-way.
The bridge - that connected Garmillapallu in Tekumatla mandal in Bhupalpalli to Odededu in Peddapalli - was expected to reduce the distance between Manthani, Parakal and Jammukunta towns by 50 km.
