NEWARK, N.J. (PIX11) -- A New Jersey man was arrested on Saturday for attempting to carry a handgun with loaded magazines onto a plane at Newark Liberty International Airport, the Transportation Security Administration official announced on Tuesday.
"It has been a very busy Memorial Day Holiday Weekend travel period here at Newark Liberty International Airport as well as other airports across the country," said Thomas Carter, TSA's Federal Security Director for New Jersey. "Our officers are good at their jobs, and even with sky-high checkpoint volume, they remain alert and vigilant in screening individuals who are arriving at our checkpoints."
The man was carrying a 9mm handgun along with magazines that were fully loaded on his carry-on luggage; he had a total of 30 bullets on him, officials said.
According to federal aviation laws, which allow TSA agents to issue fines, the Garden State man may face a fine of up to $15,000 in addition to being arrested.
"Travelers need to pay more attention to the items that they have inside their carry-on bags," Carter added. "Travelers are responsible for the contents of their carry-on bags. In addition, responsible gun owners know where their firearms are at all times, and they know not to bring them to a security checkpoint."
The TSA reminds gun owners that they can travel with their guns, but they have to be unloaded and packed inside a locked, hard-sided case. Firearms and replicas are never permitted in the plane's cabin, but they may travel with luggage in the cargo area.
