In a social media post, Trump says he was “shot with a bullet that pierced the upper part of my right ear.” The former president's campaign and aides say he's “fine” and in “great spirits” after the shooting at a campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania.

New York and New Jersey officials have responded to what officials are calling an assassination attempt, including New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy.

"Please pray for President Trump, everyone at the rally, and our country," Murphy said.

The NYPD increased security at a number of potential hot spots in New York City, officials said. Videos posted to social media show people gathering outside Trump Tower in New York City and a police presence.

"Out of an abundance of caution, the NYPD will be increasing its presence across the city, including at Trump Tower, 40 Wall Street, Foley Square, & City Hall," Deputy Mayor for Communications Fabien Levy said Saturday evening.

Mayor Eric Adams on Saturday responded to the shooting.

"No one should be the victim of gun violence," Adams said. "Today, in Pennsylvania, we witnessed once again the danger of guns in the hands of violent extremists. We must do better for all Americans."
