NEW YORK (PIX11) -- PIX11’s new segment “Transit Talk” brings MTA leadership to discuss issues faced daily by commuters.
MTA Deputy Chief Jose LaSalle kicked off the new segment on Thursday. He discussed recent protests following the police shooting at a Brooklyn subway station, grid lock around the United Nations, and the newly announced capital plan for infrastructure improvements.
LaSalle called the police shooting at the Sutter Avenue train station in Brooklyn an “unfortunate incident” but maintained that the transit system is safe for commuters.
A bystander suffered brain damage when he was shot by police on Sunday, while another bystander was grazed by a bullet. Police say they were pursuing a man accused of fare evasion.
LaSalle also advised commuters to take mass transit to avoid heavy traffic around the United Nations during the General Assembly.
“We’re running peak service, our normal service. We run plenty of trains and buses during this week…we’re running about 87% on time performance on most subway lines,” LaSalle said.
For those who prefer to take the buses, LaSalle assured that dispatchers would be out in the field working with the NYPD to help navigate frozen zones.
When asked about funding from the capital plan, LaSalle could only say that the money would be used towards upgrading the signal system, creating an inter-borough railway, and launching 12,000 new subway cars.
