Traffic nightmare predicted for BQE closure

BROOKLYN HEIGHTS, Brooklyn (PIX11) -- Get ready for massive traffic tie-ups in Brooklyn near the Brooklyn and Manhattan bridges this weekend.

Blame it on the BQE repair work so avoid the area or take mass transit.

Queens-bound BQE traffic heading towards the Brooklyn Bridge is always a nightmare on Atlantic Avenue and on the expressway, but it will be far worse this weekend.

That is because of repair work being done on the aging and decrepit cantilever in Brooklyn Heights.

The closure will affect Queens-bound traffic between Atlantic Avenue and Sands Streets from 2 am Saturday to 4 am Monday.

“It’s going to be really bad,” Sandra Jean-Louis, a passerby, told PIX11 News. When PIX11 asked her what people should do, Jean-Louis suggested people bike, take mass transit, or walk.

“This weekend is going to be a nightmare on the streets of Brooklyn,” Lincoln Restler a city councilmember for the area, told PIX11 News.

Specifically new concrete and reinforced steel bars are being added on spans on Clark Street and Grace Court.

So, all Queens-bound traffic will be detoured off the BQE and onto Atlantic Avenue, but there is an added problem.

On Sunday, another city department will be working on a different construction project along Atlantic Avenue at Smith Street, so the detour will have a detour.

The Department of Design and Construction says work must be done so traffic lanes will shift.

The parking lane is being temporarily removed for Sunday.

“We couldn’t believe the agencies weren’t coordinating with one another on this,” Restler told PIX11 News.

So, two detours in one weekend, and drivers and pedestrians are worried about what this means for everyone.

“I’ll not be driving this way,” one driver told PIX11 News.

When PIX11 asked one Brooklyn Heights resident what people should do as far as driving, Eric Groom’s reply was three simple words. “don’t come here.”
