A one-and-a-half-year-old girl died in Gujarat's Amreli district on Saturday after she fell into a borewell and was trapped for 17 hours despite a rescue operation to pull her out.

The girl, Aarohi, was playing in an agricultural field in Surgapura village when she accidentally fell into the borewell, estimated to be between 45-50 feet deep, on Friday.

When Aarohi's family raised the alarm, rescue personnel arrived at the spot and began an operation to rescue her. A team from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and Amreli fire department led the operation and inserted oxygen pipes in the borewell for the toddler to breathe.

After 17 hours, the rescue team succeeded in pulling out Aarohi, who was found unconscious.

Health department officials declared Aarohi dead after examining her.

Her body was taken to a hospital for a post-mortem examination.
